University pulled off a great performance to run the coppers ragged and trundle home with a 4 try bonus point victory.
The boys were looking really sharp and hungry for a bit of payback after our last visit to the coppers backyard. Right from the off, Uni signalled their intention to keep the ball alive and run from all corners of the park. Police were tough to crack though and they held on till they gave a away a penalty in front of the posts for Jamie to slot one over from outside the 22. Rattled, Police started using big runners from off the rucks but were really not making any headway as good defence from midfield were able to absorb the pressure with solid tackling. The home side nudge a 3 point attempt too wide and Uni storm back down into their half to score the first try in the corner. Forwards secured possession in the 22 and ball was whisked wide to backs. Chris supports well and off-loads to Ben Jessop to dot down in the corner. Jamie converts. Tom Palmer chips with a try in not long after. A third try was awarded under the posts when a lose kick into the ingoal area is chased down by a few uni boys hungry to get on the scoreboard. A police defender obstructs a chaser and is shown the yellow for a well deserved 10 minute break. Desperate defending in the last few minutes of the half saw Uni deny certain tries with great tackling. Highlights of the half include one straight throw-in from Dennis Espinas, a delightful 20 metre burst on the halfway from Dennis, and sounds of "Yee-Hawww!!!"-ing, "Yeah-Baby!!!" to the sound of thigh slapping whenever we scored a try, also from Dennis.
The 2nd half was a much tighter affair and Police were keener to hang on to the ball and keep it safe in the pack. Playing on the back foot for most of the half, uni were able to capitalise on a moment of error from the homeside when Tom Palmer chases his own kick from the halfway, squeezing past two defenders and beating them to the line and drop on the ball for the bonus point try. Police were not ready to give in just yet and lanuch raid after raid into uni's 22. Uni were down to 14 men when referee had enough of Dan Oh's interpretation of events on the paddock and sent him packing with 10 minutes to go. With a man over, Police claim a couple of tries to for a more respectable scoreline. |
